EcoRights School

With the support of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung-Armenia, the Green Armenia NGO and the Forests of Armenia NGO have founded the School of Ecological Rights (EcoRights School). The school was founded with the aim of involving lawyers, judges, and law enforcement agencies in the protection of nature. In the future we hope to expand our audience to include other specialists in our training program.

One of the trainers at the EcoRights School will be Artur Grigoryan - specialist in ecological law and president of "Ecological Law" NGO. The topics of his training will be:

Armenian jurisprudence on the judicial jurisdiction of non-governmental organizations,

Armenian judical practice in case of lawsuits challenging Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) examination conclusions.

Hayk Alumyan will also teach at the EcoRights School. He is one of the first in Armenia to defend the right to a healthy environment in courts, particularly through the cases of Teghut and Amulsar, which are precedents in the history of trials in Armenia. Hayk Alumyan’s topics at the EcoRights School will be:

Application of the Aarhus Convention in RA,

Trials on environmental issues that reached ECtHR,

Protection of property rights (seizure of property as a result of mining, eminent domain).

Nazeli Vardanyan, a lawyer and specialist in environmental law, will also teach at the EcoRights School. She is also one of the first in Armenia to defend ecological rights in courts. Nazeli Vardanyan's topics are:

SLAPP cases (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) and large mining companies,

Application of EIA legislation and new trends.

Maud Sarliève - an expert in human rights law, international criminal law and international humanitarian law, will also teach at the school. Her topic is:

The right to a healthy environment: suggested steps to make it a reality for all in Armenia.

The seminars will be held on July 8-9, 2023 in Tsaghkadzor, Armenia. Practicing lawyers, judges, assistant judges, law enforcement officers may apply. Familiarity with the environmental field is not required.
